We are an environmentally responsible organisation and strive to minimise the harmful environmental effects of our operation. To this end, we have made tremendous strides to reduce the amount of paper that we use in our offices. 2009 is an exciting year for us as we are in line to meet our target of reducing our paper consumption by two-thirds in the course of the year. Volunteers can expect to receive a far greater proportion of our correspondence and documentation electronically; a move that we feel reflects the demands of an increasingly computer-literate clientele. We also encourage our staff to use environment friendly methods of transportation to and from our offices and provide showers and secure facilities for bicycle storage. Further, we offset the carbon emissions of our business travel by subscribing to a Carbon Management Programme. Finally, we go to great lengths to conserve energy consumption in our office by curbing heating and cooling levels and lighting.

As a scientific research organisation we are without equal in our field. We employ development professionals and experts in nearly every branch of the natural sciences and we have produced over 450 articles in well-known peer-reviewed journals, many of which can be downloaded from our website for free. Our findings have informed policymakers and academics the world over, leading to the establishment of national parks in Tanzania and Mozambique, and the creation of community-based organisations throughout the world. We offer a high standard of training to volunteers, staff, and beneficiaries. We assist the most deprived communities in developing sustainable alternative forms of income, delivering economic and social stability while improving the capacity of local stakeholders and building their confidence. In addition, we have built numerous visitor centres to educate local communities and we have held hundreds of environmental education and capacity building workshops.
